Upcoming Mega Events
No matter what time you arrive in the capital of Thailand, something will be going on. Venues in Thailand are open 7 days a week, and special activities frequently take place long after closing time. In addition, there are always outcall massage guys that will meet you at your hotel to help you get over jet lag, so keep that in mind as well. In the end, however, you are likely most interested in Bangkok’s notorious gay nightlife, and there certainly is plenty of it. Here is a concise summary to whet your appetite and get you planning your next trip.
By day, Bangkok is the same as any other Capital City. It has its Palace, its river, its department stores, its tourist attractions, an its business sector. That is by day. By night it’s a different animal. The neon lights go on, the boys come out to play and it becomes a beast of a very different color. Sure, it still has all the normal capital city things – restaurants, cinemas, pubs, apartment blocks and everything that goes with them, but that’s not what we’re interested in, are we?
In the day time (and especially the afternoon) if you know where to look you can find the boys, but they are hidden. At night they advertise themselves in bright neon. Loud insistent barkers will call you in to Soi Twilight, Silom, Sukhumvit – names that ring off the gay map’s tongue. The lights beckon you in, the boys will call and lure you, the sounds and smells and above all the promise will make you cross their threshold. I’ve been there, I’ve done it and I’ve got the tee shirt to prove it. Now I want to share it with you. So without further ado, look into my site and enjoy Bangkok through my eyes.
If you’re new to the city, don’t be scared. Dive right in. The boys don’t bite (unless you pay them extra!).
Discos and Nightclubs
Bangkok has the majority of its entertainment bars in Soi Twilight. It’s the gay neon capital of Bangkok. If you want a raunchy boy show, which frequently will leave nothing to the imagination come here. The bars in Soi Twilight have a huge range of boys and shows, and will entertain you for many nights. If you want to find rude Bangkok, it’s here. Dirty and sleazy Bangkok isn’t far away either in soi Anuman Ratchathon. When you say to a visitor, gay Bangkok, the lights of Soi Twilight would be the first thing that comes to mind. So dive into the selection and have a great time.
The average price of a drink here is 250B with boy drinks frequently being more (up to 400B). If you get into your mind you’re paying for the show, then the price isn’t so high. If you want to go in and look at boys, it’s a lot of money. Pattaya entertainment bars (most without shows), by comparison, will charge you from 100B to 160B.But for sheer quantity and “rudeness” of show you can’t beat Bangkok. Come along and enjoy. After all it’s not a huge amount of money and you don’t do it every night (do you?). Here is a sampling of the bars you will find:
- DJ Station – Silom Soi 2 - This gay Disco has been open for 14 years. Its décor is a tasteful modern style. There’s plenty of drinking, dancing and a cabaret show at midnight. For those who like a comfortable atmosphere the long corridor on the upper floor is the best place and it is not crowded. If you want to relax and chat with your friends, there are sofas on the 3rd floor. The D.J. will entertain you with new music; pop, dance, remix and disco on a great sound system. D.J. station really gets going after 11pm – especially at the weekend.
- G.O.D. (Guys on Display) – Silom Soi 2/1 - Some would say the best Dance Club in Bangkok. It’s probably the one that goes on latest anyway. Gets busy from around 2 am and closes early morning. Great guys dancing on the stage. If you’re a late night party animal, this is the place to try!
- Dream Boys – Soi Twlight - Upstairs entertainment bar with two large central dance stages. There’s lots of seating, but some isn’t too well positioned. It’s very popular and has lots of friendly, beautiful boys. They also have shows (shared with The Boys downstairs) every night at 9.30pm and 12.15 am. Drink prices are high, top price for even Bangkok bars (300B). However, the shows are long and spectacular, you will enjoy the amazing set up from the boys who really are there to entertain you. The show hasn’t changed much from last year or even the year before for that matter. One drawback, the drag / cabaret part of the show drags on far too long with far too many embarrassing moments for the patrons they pick on.
- Jupiter 2002 – Thaniya Soi 2 - Very much alive and kicking here. The place is a little off the beaten track and doesn’t get the traffic it deserves. They normally have shows and frequently special shows. The boys are a little on the more muscular side and slightly older than some places, but they are fit and willing. The drinks are at the top end of the price range (270B) but the show, featuring their muscular and buffed boys is well done and makes the drink price OK?? Worth calling in to. To find it, cross Surawong from Soi Twilight and walk along to Thaniya Soi 2 (very slightly towards the Expressway from Soi Twilight). It’s just down Soi Thaniya 2 on the right hand side.
Other Things to See and Do
No matter if you traveled to Bangkok with your partner, or if you have just met a special guy the night before in one of the venues just mentioned, there are many options during the day to keep you occupied. Since you are in the city, however, consider the following tour as a way to spend some quality time with a hot guy of your choice. Perhaps one of the most unique tourist adventures in Thailand can be found in the floating markets of Bangkok. Perhaps this is because the event truly epitomizes what is still a daily way of life for many of the Thai people, as individuals buy and sell fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, primarily as a means of cooking fresh and nutritious meals. Over time, this has morphed into a tourist spectacle that has put a smile on the faces of literally thousands of visitors on an annual basis. When in Bangkok, you should really consider a morning out at the floating markets in order to experience an ancient way of life that still transcends the hustle and bustle of one of the largest metropolitan cities in the world.
Today, the floating markets are largely centered on the tourist trade, but that is certainly ok. I mean, that is what we are. To begin, you will be picked up early in the morning from your hotel. Early morning means exactly that. On my last visit, it was right around 6am. While that sounds evil, you will be thankful. The Bangkok sun can be brutal in the afternoon, so the floating markets take place in the relative cool of the morning. You should return to your hotel by noon, depending on which specific type of tour you go on. While you could go direct to the area that the floating markets are by yourself, that is not recommended as it is difficult to navigate and time consuming. You will enjoy the experience much more by taking part in a scheduled tour. It is really no expensive, all of the hassle of getting to and from the markets is taken away from you, and the interaction with other tour members that you meet is memorable as well.
When you arrive at your destination, you will be led into a boat that ls likely quite old. Do not be alarmed; this is to recreate an ancient tradition after all. As you being floating along, you will encounter the market boats, and they will be piled so high with goods to sell, you might struggle to even locate the vendor! Some of what you find are tropical fruit, of which Thailand is famous for and has many tasty varieties, fresh vegetables, coconut juice that is cut open already and ready to drink, and local food that has already been cooked and ready to eat. Through it all, your local Thai guide will be taking great care of you. He or she will point out various landmarks along the way, and even help you make some purchases should you choose so. A recommendation is to apply some sunscreen prior to leaving your hotel. Even though you are getting an early start, the sun will be quite intense while out on the water so your skin will thank you. Once the tour is complete, everyone will load up in their vans for either a return to the hotel, or to another afternoon tour depending on your schedule. Enjoy!
