Broken Heel Festival is a desert celebration in the remote mining town of Broken Hill in far western New South Wales. It usually takes place over five days in early September to mark the anniversary of the cult film "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." In recent years the festival has drawn thousands of visitors for drag performances, cabaret shows, street parades and classic outback adventures. However, organisers have announced that the future of the festival is uncertain because the Palace Hotel, which hosts many of the events, is undergoing renovations in 2025. As of mid‑2025 the next edition of the festival is still awaiting confirmation. Fans are encouraged to follow official channels for updates.
In typical years the programme includes the Frock On or Frock Off party on Friday night with showgirls and DJ sets, a Saturday night shindig, and the Main Drag in Drag street parade where locals and visitors strut their stuff down Argent Street. Sunday’s Silverton Day Out whisks guests to the ghost town of Silverton for a pub lunch and performances at the iconic Silverton Hotel, and there are film screenings, art tours and bus excursions around the rugged Mundi Mundi plains. The festival’s inclusive atmosphere is a huge part of its appeal, with a drag queen competition and workshops that encourage everyone to join in.
The remote setting is part of the adventure: most visitors fly into Broken Hill or embark on an epic road or rail journey across the outback. Accommodation is limited, so in years when the event goes ahead it sells out quickly. The organisers also collaborate with local charities and community groups, ensuring that the festival supports the region’s hospitality industry and celebrates the heritage of Broken Hill.
If an edition takes place in 2025 it is likely to follow the familiar September pattern, but for now the dates remain to be announced.
