Sodoma Sauna is Florence's primary gay sauna, located on Via Pisana west of the Oltrarno — slightly outside the historic centre but accessible by bus or a 20-minute walk from Santa Croce. The facility is well-established and provides a standard complement of facilities: Turkish steamroom, Finnish dry sauna, darkroom maze, private cabins, jacuzzi and a bar. The name is deliberately provocative and historically aware — Sodoma was also the name of a 16th-century Sienese painter (Giovanni Antonio Bazzi) known for his depictions of St Sebastian and his documented same-sex relationships, making the choice both blasphemous and art-historically informed. The sauna is clean and well-maintained with a loyal local clientele. Monday and Tuesday are the quieter days; Friday and Saturday bring larger crowds. Theme nights run monthly. Entry includes towel and locker hire.
