Why Not is tucked into a narrow lane off the Spanish Quarter — the densely packed historic neighbourhood of impossibly tall buildings and laundry-strung vicoli that climbs the Vomero hill above Piazza del Plebiscito. The bar is small, atmospheric and very Neapolitan: rough plaster walls, exposed stone, candles in bottles and a bartender who knows everyone by name. It has been consistently welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community for well over a decade without advertising itself specifically as a gay bar, which is part of its appeal — it is a neighbourhood place that happens to have a gay-friendly character, embedded in the fabric of one of Europe's most fascinatingly chaotic urban environments. Friday and Saturday nights draw a heavier LGBTQ+ crowd; other nights are more mixed. Good for late drinks after dinner in the Spanish Quarter.
