The bay at Mazzarò, directly below the cliff on which Taormina sits, contains one of Sicily's most beautiful small beaches — a narrow crescent of pebbly sand bracketed by rocky headlands, with the Isola Bella nature reserve (a tiny island connected to the shore by a sand bar) providing the backdrop. The beach has an established gay-friendly section, well-known to international LGBTQ+ visitors and to the Sicilian gay community, in the quieter stretch near the northern end of the bay. The water is the clear, warm Ionian Sea — excellent for snorkelling. Beach access is via the cable car (funivia) from Taormina's main square, an eight-minute descent that is itself a spectacular experience. Several beach clubs in the bay provide sunlounger hire and bar service. Active May through September.
