The ITC Hotel on the Prinsengracht is one of those rare hospitality operations that has maintained its identity and its reputation simultaneously for decades. A small canal-house hotel in the heart of Amsterdam's most beautiful canal ring, the ITC has been operating as an explicitly gay hotel since the 1980s and has built a loyal international following that returns year after year. The physical property is everything that Amsterdam canal-house accommodation should be: steep staircases, uneven floors, canal views from the upper rooms, and the specific atmosphere of a building from the seventeenth century that has been thoughtfully adapted for modern use. The hotel's gay identity is embedded in its culture rather than performed for marketing purposes — the staff are gay, the guest mix is gay, the atmosphere is the result of forty-plus years of serving the community rather than a recent rebranding exercise. The Prinsengracht location is one of the best in Amsterdam: ten minutes' walk from Reguliersdwarsstraat, five minutes from the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark, and on one of the city's most scenic canals. Book well in advance for Pride week.
