Like Speakeasy, Underground is a basement bar — the architecture of Merchant City's 18th-century commercial buildings lends itself naturally to basement venues — but it operates with a slightly more active music policy and a programming calendar of themed nights that gives it a regular audience beyond the walk-in trade. Regular events include underwear nights, drag performances and Pride week parties. The John Street double of Speakeasy and Underground means that this short stretch provides two distinct gay venues within steps of each other, and the combined foot traffic gives the area a genuine gay village density that is unusual for a Scottish city outside the central strip.
