The Flamingo is the most recognised name on Blackpool's gay scene — a bar and entertainment venue that embodies the Northern gay resort tradition: drag shows, camp cabaret, cheap drinks and a crowd that has come specifically to have a good time without pretension. Blackpool's gay scene is built on this tradition: working-class, Northern, entertainment-focused, and operating on Bank Holiday schedules when the town fills with visitors from Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and beyond. The Flamingo's drag shows are the best illustration of what Blackpool offers that Brighton or London do not: a specific Northern gay entertainment culture with its roots in the 1970s and 1980s club scene.
