Galeria Café has been in Ipanema since the 1990s and is one of the oldest continuously operating gay bars in Rio de Janeiro. The location — in the residential blocks behind Ipanema beach, close to the Posto 9 gay section — positions it as the natural after-beach destination for the LGBTQ+ crowd that spends its afternoons on the sand. The bar occupies a gallery-style space that has lent it its name; over the decades it has hosted art, performance, and the full spectrum of social events that a gay bar in a neighbourhood as culturally active as Ipanema naturally generates.
