Richmond Pride is the annual LGBTQ+ festival at Brown's Island and the downtown riverfront — a setting that uses the industrial-era geography of the James River, with the canal walk, the hydroelectric plant, and the historic Mayo Bridge as backdrop, to create one of the most visually distinctive Pride festival environments on the East Coast. The event draws approximately 20,000 people each October for a weekend of performances, community organisation programming, and the celebration of a city whose LGBTQ+ community has grown in visibility and confidence alongside the broader transformation of Richmond's self-image. The October timing takes advantage of the James River's beautiful autumn weather and places Richmond Pride among the last major LGBTQ+ events of the East Coast season. Brown's Island — a flat river island accessed by a pedestrian bridge — provides a natural contained festival site with water on multiple sides and the downtown Richmond skyline visible from the main stage. Richmond Pride has grown steadily in recent years as the city's progressive culture has developed and as the removal of Confederate monuments has signalled a new chapter in Richmond's relationship with its own history.
