One of the continent's more impressive and comprehensive collections of European art, the Gemäldegalerie straddles six centuries, with works by Fra Angelico, Lippi, Dürer, Cranach, Holbein, van der Weyden, van Eyck, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer and Gainsborough. The collection, started in 1830, moved to its current central spot in Berlin's postwar, Berlin Wall-instigated Kulturforum arts zone in 1998
