SUMMARY:The Art of Fiction
DESCRIPTION:As John Gardner remarks in The Art of Fiction\\, “What the
beginning writer ordinarily wants is a set of rules on what to do and wha
t not to do in writing fiction.” And while general rules exist\\, Gardn
er observes that such “supposed aesthetic absolutes prove relative unde
 r pressure. They’re laws\\, but they slip\\,” he says. Indeed\\, many
of the stories that touch us—those whose impact lingers for months\\,
if not years\\, after we turn the final page—are constructed with these
general rules of craft in mind.\\nAlthough this course will predominantl
y take the form of a workshop\\, it will also provide insights into the c
raft of writing by drawing upon principles from The Art of Fiction\\, ess
ays on literary craft\\, and published short stories. By exploring the
absolutes” that govern fiction and creative nonfiction\\, students wil
l equip themselves to bend if not break these rules in service of the sto
ries they seek to tell.\\nDesigned for beginner and advanced writers\\, t
his course meets for ten sessions total. Students will have the opportuni
ty to share two pieces (up to 25 pages each) and receive constructive fee
dback in a thoughtfully facilitated\\, supportive atmosphere. Although no
t required\\, students may wish to obtain a copy of Gardner’s Art of Fi
ction. All other readings to be provided.\\nAccess Program\\nWe want our
