The group celebrates classic and contemporary Black authors of fiction and nonfiction\\, all in the comfort of a historic feminist bookstore where many of these autho rs once read or shared their works! Our goal is for these texts to be wel coming and accessible regardless of your background or familiarity with t he books.\\nYemisi Combahee\\, a senior organizer with Black Feminist Fut ure is the facilitator of this group. All community members are invited t o attend with the acknowledgment that this is a space that centers Black women and gender expansive folks’\\; thoughts\\, creativity\\, and l ived experiences. We encourage folks to read the months book before our g athering but it is not required –\\; come as you are\\, regardless o f how much you’\\;ve read!\\nThis group meets in-person at Charis on the first Sunday of each month at 3pm.\\nAbout our September book:\\nSas safrass\\, Cypress &\\; Indigo by Ntozake Shange\\nThe story of three sisters and their mother from Charleston\\, South Carolina.\\nSassafrass\ \, the oldest\\, is a poet and a weaver like her mother before her. Havin g gone north to college\\, she is now living with other artists in Los An geles and trying to weave a life out of her work\\, her man\\, her memori es and dreams. Cypress\\, the dancer\\, leaves home to find new ways of m oving in the world. Indigo\\, the youngest\\, is still a child of Charles ton-“\\;too much of the south in her”\\;-who lives in poetry an d has the supreme gift of seeing the obvious magic of the world.
