 hian documentaries of our lifetime\\, Harlan County\\, USA\\, as our clos
 ing film! The award-winning film from 1976 offers an unflinching look int
 o a grueling coal miners&#8217\\; strike in a small Kentucky town. Today\
 \, 50 years later\\, this gorgeously restored film offers not just a look
  back in time but also serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of a
 nd need for organized labor and unions.\\nHarlan County\\, U.S.A.\\nThis 
 film documents the coal miners&#8217\\; strike against the Brookside Mine
  of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County\\, Kentucky\\, in June\\
 , 1973. Eastover&#8217\\;s refusal to sign a contract (when the miners jo
 ined with the United Mine Workers of America) led to the strike\\, which 
 lasted more than a year and included violent battles between gun-toting c
 ompany thugs/scabs and the picketing miners and their supportive womenfol
 k.\\nDirector Barbara Kopple puts the strike into perspective by giving u
 s some background on the historical plight of the miners and some history
  of the UMWA. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with N

 Rust Belt &amp\\; Appalachia Documentary Film Festival\\, the Backyard Do
 cs Film Festival continues its trademark DIY screening style\\, holding s
 creenings in unconventional locations such as repurposed factories\\, div
 e bars\\, and backyards. However\\, this year\\, we are expanding the fes
 tival to include traditional theater venues for some of our more well-att
 ended screenings. The four-day event will also showcase a photography exh
 ibition\\, private rough-cut feedback sessions\\, workshops with world-re
 nowned filmmakers\\, and\\, of course\\, great afterparties. It’s the o
 ne time of the year when filmmakers\\, journalists\\, and artists of all 
 stripes can come together and create new connections while helping redefi
