Berlin\\,15.01.2026 DESCRIPTION:On 8 and 9 October 2026\\, the German Association for East Eu ropean Studies (DGO)\\, the Freie Universität Berlin (FU) and the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS) will jointly host the third Congress of Central and East European Studies (ceecon26) in Berlin .\\nceecon is the largest multidisciplinary congress on Central and Easte rn Europe in the German-speaking realm. It was established in 2022 as a c ooperative project of the DGO and the Freie Universität’s Institute fo r East European Studies (Osteuropa-Institut).\\nceecon provides the inter national research community with an important forum for exchanging and di scussing the latest research findings on the region. The congress spotlig hts scholarly work on the Baltic States\\, Central and Eastern Europe\\, the South Caucasus\\, and Central Asia.\\nAcademic exchange on topics rel evant to all scholars in the field will take place in plenary sessions. P arallel sections will address research questions concerning a broad varie ty of topics and methodological approaches. ceecon also offers space for the presentation of research projects and round tables on special issues. We especially encourage young researches to participate in the congress. \\nThe theme of ceecon26 is (Un)Certainties\\nThere is a tangible sense o f living in a time when established certainties are unravelling and new u ncertainties are reshaping global realities. Russia’s war against Ukrai ne and its far-reaching implications for Ukraine\\, Russia\\, the wider r egion\\, and the world are still impossible to fully grasp. At the same t ime\\, the international order rooted in the post-World War II era is und ergoing significant changes. Europe\\, particularly its former socialist regions\\, but also Central Asia and the Caucasus\\, are pivotal areas fo r a restructuring of orders. Old alliances are put to the test\\, while n ew alliances and institutions are forming with uncertain stability and ou tcomes. While we observe the emergence of new orders\\, the resilience of both democracies and autocracies is contested. Political\\, economic\\, and military power\\, norms\\, identities\\, and memories are being reneg otiated. Violent solutions have become more appealing to various actors\\ , shaping perceptions\\, practices\\, and policies at local\\, national\\ , and international levels. In this complex situation\\, literature and c ulture play a special role as spaces where new cognitive frames and model s are explored.\\nceecon26 will bring together different disciplinary per spectives (history\\, sociology\\, political science\\, political economy \\, geography\\, anthropology\\, literary and cultural studies\\, etc.) t o reflect on historical and contemporary uncertainties and certainties an d on interactions between the two. How much certainty is there within the apparent uncertainties? How do people and societies deal with growing un certainties\\, and how does this influence the stability of orders? How d o changes of regional power relationships\\, structures\\, and institutio ns intersect with global developments? The inherent tension between certa inty and uncertainty also raises definitional and methodological issues: What exactly constitutes (un)certainty? How can it be measured or observe d?\\nUnder the umbrella theme of (Un)Certainties\\, we especially welcome contributions on the following themes:\\n• Dynamics and effects of war and violence\\n• Security perceptions and policies\\n• Global (dis)o rder and the formation of new political\\, economic\\, and social orders\ \n• Democratisation and autocratisation\\n• Resilience through adapta tion\\n• Historical perspectives on (un)certainties\\n• Contested eco logies\\, environmental catastrophes\\, and environmental humanities\\n†¢ Migrations and movements\\n• Academic freedom and civil/fundamental r ights\\n• Artificial intelligence and new orders\\n• Crisis response and innovation\\n• Culture\\, memory\\, and politics\\n• Comparative perspectives\\n• (Un)certain perspectives for East European Studies\\nW e welcome proposals for:\\n–\\; Individual papers\\n–\\; Panels (Proposals for panels should consist of three thematically relevant pape rs from different institutions and\\, preferably\\, from different discip lines.
