Rayna\\, whose personal collection is housed at the arc hives\\, will sit in conversation with artist and director of Bloodsister s: Leather\\, Dykes\\, and Sadomasochism Michelle Handelman about the lon g-standing connections between electronic music and Leatherdyke culture. Rayna has said of the Black Meteoric Star project\\, now in its 20th year \\, “It’s always had this thread about creating the kind of atmospher e that exists in queer dungeons\\, making music that could provide the id eal soundtrack for the kinds of SM spaces I imagined as a young person\\, and found as an adult.” Materials from the archive will be on view tha t highlight how Leatherdyke culture and electronic and dance sounds have intertwined\\, alongside materials from Rayna’s collection that share t he visual and audio history of the Black Meteoric Star project.\\nNo one will be turned away for lack of funds! We will have KN95s and masks with equivalent filtration availabl e at the event.\\nBios:\\nGavilán Rayna Russom is a musician artist\\, curator and folklorist based in NYC. Raised in Providence\\, Rhode Island on freestyle\\, rap\\, electro\\, and synth-driven funk during the break dance era of the early 1980s\\, Rayna is a lifelong devotee of electronic rhythms and beats. Currently based in New York City\\, she has spent ove r two decades at the vanguard of underground sound\\, constantly redefini ng the boundaries of techno\\, synth\\, and experimental music.\\nDubbed the “Counterculture Queen” by The Quietus\\, Rayna’\\;s music ha s developed in parallel with her visual art\\, writing\\, performance\\, curation\\, and research work that celebrates themes including liberation \\, healing\\, sexuality\\, BDSM\\, sound\\, deviance\\, gender expansive ness\\, time\\, memory\\, and the dead\\, all through a cultural lens. Sh e was the artist-in-residence at Esponja\\, São Paulo\\, in 2024. She ha s presented works in performance\\, video\\, and installation at internat ional institutions including Moma PS1\\, the Migros Museum für Gegenwart skunst\\, Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin\\, the São Paulo Biennial\\, Art Basel\\, Art Basel Miami\\, the Donau Festival\\, Kunsthalle Zürich\\, B ig Ears Festival\\, Foksall Gallery Foundation\\, the Center for Art\\, R esearch\\, and Alliances\\, Chicago Filmmakers\\, the Museum of Modern Ar t\\, Moogfest\\, E-Flux\\, and National Sawdust. In addition to her solo work\\, Russom gained international reco gnition as a member of the band LCD Soundsystem\\, contributing synthesiz er artistry and production expertise to the group’s sound. She has also been the driving force and producer of more experimental collaborative p rojects like Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom and The Crystal Ark. Her background is a s tudy in opposites–raised during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s\\, Han delman split her time between Chicago\\, where her mother was a fixture i n the art world\\, and Los Angeles\\, where her father was a player in th e sex industry. Over the years Handelman has voraciously traversed both t hese worlds\\, developing a body of work that investigates ways of lookin g at the forbidden and revealing dark\\, subconscious layers of outsider agency.\\nHandelman is a Guggenheim Fellow and recipient of many awards i ncluding Creative Capital\\, Art Matters\\, NYSCA\\, and the Rockefeller Foundation.
