SUMMARY:ILGA-Europe Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:What does it take to keep believing that change is possible w
hen the political ground is shifting beneath our feet?\\nFriday’s plena
ry session at the ILGA-Europe Annual Conference brought together three pe
rspectives on that question\\, from building a campaign that people want
to be part of\\, to defending human rights in increasingly difficult poli
tical spaces.\\nClaire McGowran\\, who led the social media campaign for
Catherine Connolly’s winning presidential campaign in Ireland\\, spoke
about the art people made\\, the small businesses that created campaign m
erchandise\\, and the children who dressed up as Connolly for Halloween.
The campaign became something people could make their own. As Claire put
it: “Everyone felt part of our campaign.”\\nThat sense of participati
on matters. So does being honest about the ground we’re standing on. Gr
aeme Reid\\, the UN Independent Expert on sexual orientation and gender i
dentity\\, spoke about the rollback of rights and the growing resistance
to gender equality\\, and about the importance of not losing sight of the
possibilities that remain\\, even when formal spaces become harder to na
vigate. ie.sogi\\nYanna Parnin\\, Head of the SOGIESC Unit at the Council
of Europe\\, offered a reminder worth holding onto: “Being realistic a
bout it doesn’t mean we have to enter a resignation phase where we donâ
€™t believe in what’s next.”\\nShe pointed to concrete progress\\, in
cluding the Council of Europe’s first-ever strategy on equal rights for
LGBTI people and the group of Member States organised to defend LGBTI eq
uality.\\nNone of this makes the challenges disappear. But it reminds us
that the political moment is not the whole story. People can find ways to
participate\\, institutions can still make progress\\, and the work of b
uilding something better continues even under pressure. That is what it m
eans to imagine a different future without looking away from the present.
