0 PM\\nOverview\\nPiece together fragments of poetry and biography to tra
ce how Sappho became history’s enduring symbol of queer womanhood. Foll
owed by Q&A.\\nOf all the poets whose works survive from ancient Greece\\
, Sappho may have the greatest claim to being a cultural icon. Both her n
ame and the island where she lived – Lesbos – have become words we us
e to describe\\, and imagine\\, queer womanhood and queer female love. An
d yet\\, we know almost nothing about Sappho’s life\\, and her poetry s
urvives only in fragments.\\nJoin Dr Alecto Hardwick as she introduces he
r audience to the difficulties and joys of piecing Sappho together from w
hat remains\\, offering them tools for reading and experiencing her poetr
 y. Drawing on her scholarship and her lived experience as a queer woman\\
, Alecto explores how Sappho became what she is today\\, and how we – a
s readers\\, interpreters of her poetry\\, and humans – can participate
in that story.\\nIn this talk discover what little we know about Sapphoâ
€™s life – and how much of her legend has been built on speculation and
myth. Trace how Sappho and the island of Lesbos became lasting symbols o
f queer female identity and love. Explore the surviving remains of her po
etry and learn tools for reading and interpreting incomplete ancient text
. Consider the role scholarship and cultural imagination have played in s
haping Sappho’s modern reputation.\\nFollow us on IG @seedtalks\\nDoors
open at 7pm\\, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good se
at!\\nSpeaker Bio:\\nDr Alecto Hardwick (previously known as Alexandra) i

here she teaches undergraduates and postgraduates. Her research on the an
cient world often explores identity\\, otherness\\, and strangeness in al
l their forms. She regularly collaborates with artists\\, composers\\, an
d other creators\\, and is passionate about sharing the ancient world wit
h the widest possible audience.\\nTestimonials from our guests\\n⭐ Seed
