Tropical Bar sits at the Little Venice seafront, immediately adjacent to the narrow strip of old sea-captains' houses that have been converted into bars, restaurants, and cafés projecting over the Aegean. It is one of several sunset bars along this stretch of Mykonos Town, but its specifically gay following and its long operation in the same location give it a character that the more recently arrived venues lack. The bar's physical position — looking west along the water, with the windmills visible above and the wake of the occasional boat providing movement in the otherwise serene water view — is the primary attraction, and the cocktails are designed to last long enough that the transition from the vivid colours of the pre-sunset sky to the deep blue of dusk happens while you are still sitting there. Tropical Bar is best visited between 7pm and 9pm, during the window when the Mykonos sunset ritual is at its most beautiful and most social.
