Sub Club on Münzstraße is the anchor of Duisburg's gay scene — a city that is often overlooked in Germany's gay travel circuit but has maintained a consistent LGBTQ+ presence that reflects the Ruhr's particular social character. Duisburg is one of Germany's most underestimated cities: home to Europe's largest inland port, a former steel centre that has reinvented itself through culture (the Landschaftspark industrial monument, the RheinPark), and a diverse population of over 500,000 that includes significant communities from Turkey, the former Yugoslavia and across the EU. The gay scene is modest in size but stable — a city of half a million people generates enough LGBTQ+ community to sustain a real scene, even if it doesn't have the density of Cologne or Düsseldorf, both less than an hour away by rail. Sub Club serves this community as the central social hub: friendly, regular, unpretentious in the way of Ruhr cities generally. The proximity to Cologne (40 minutes by train) and Düsseldorf (20 minutes) means Duisburg's gay residents have access to larger scenes when they want them, which keeps the local scene smaller but also reduces the pressure for it to be everything to everyone.
