The Hafenbar sits near Duisburg's InnenHafen — the regenerated inner harbour that is the city's most striking post-industrial transformation. Duisburg's inner harbour redevelopment, anchored by the Museum Küppersmühle and a MKM for modern art, created a waterside cultural quarter from what was a derelict industrial dock. The Hafenbar is gay-friendly rather than gay-specific — a modern bar in a regenerated area that attracts Duisburg's creative and professional population, including a significant queer contingent. For LGBTQ+ visitors to Duisburg who want to see the city's most interesting recent urban development alongside their evening, the Hafenbar combines both. The InnenHafen itself is worth an afternoon visit: the Küppersmühle's grain elevator silhouette against the water, the Norman Foster-designed Stadtentwicklungsgesellschaft building, and the general improbability of a successful arts district in a Ruhr industrial city. Duisburg also contains Europe's largest inland port — the Rhein-Herne-Kanal and the Rhine confluence — visible from various points around the city.
