The format is traditional Dutch café: brown-bar aesthetic, good beer, straightforward bar food, conversation-oriented atmosphere. On Thursday and Saturday evenings, the gay crowd predominates. Engels is particularly valued by Rotterdam's older gay community for its lack of pretension and its consistent character across the decades.
