Bangor is a small city in central Maine — best known as Stephen King's hometown and a gateway to Acadia National Park. The LGBTQ+ scene is modest but the broader community attitude is welcoming; Maine was among the first states to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote.
LGBTQ+ Spaces
- Paddy Murphy's — downtown bar with a notably gay-friendly reputation and a welcoming mixed crowd.
- The Warm Body Collective — community arts space that hosts queer events, drag shows, and LGBTQ+ programming. Check their calendar for current events.
Community & Events
Bangor Pride is typically held in the summer — a community march and festival reflecting the strong LGBTQ+ presence in the University of Maine community. Equality Maine, a major LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation, is based in Maine and has a presence in Bangor. The Bangor Public Library has LGBTQ+ programming and a good collection of queer literature.
Regional Context
Portland, Maine (not Oregon) is the regional hub — 1.5 hours south — with a significantly larger and more developed LGBTQ+ scene including dedicated gay bars, events, and community organisations. If you're visiting the region, Portland ME is worth the drive. Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island (1.5 hours east of Bangor) has a gay-friendly tourist atmosphere in summer, particularly around the Acadia area.
