Columbus has one of the most underrated gay scenes in the Midwest. The Short North Arts District — a walkable strip of galleries, restaurants, and bars along High Street north of downtown — is the gay hub, and it's genuinely excellent.
Gay Bars — Short North
- Axis Nightclub (775 N High Street) — Columbus's main gay dance club; multiple rooms, regular themed nights, drag shows, and late hours. The anchor of the Short North gay scene.
- Union Café (782 N High Street) — gay bar and restaurant; good food, welcoming atmosphere, and a solid early-evening option before the clubs fill up.
- Slammer — leather and fetish bar; bear nights, pool tables, and a more alternative crowd.
- Exile — gay bar with regular events and a neighbourhood feel; popular with locals.
- Crescendo — dance club in the Short North cluster; pop-oriented and accessible, draws a younger crowd.
- Challenges — neighbourhood gay bar slightly off the main strip; unpretentious and welcoming.
Columbus Pride
Columbus Pride is in June — one of the Midwest's largest, drawing hundreds of thousands to the Short North and downtown. The parade moves along High Street; the festival fills the Short North. Columbus has a large Ohio State University population and a progressive urban core despite the surrounding state politics.
