South Beach's gay bar scene is centred on a few blocks around 8th Street and the grid running north from there. It is not the most sprawling scene in the United States, but what is there is active and well-established. The character breaks down by time of day as much as by venue: pool-bar culture in the afternoon, and late-night clubs for the crowd that arrives after midnight.

The 8th Street area

The concentration of gay bars in South Beach is primarily around Eighth Street and the blocks immediately north and south. Several venues are within a few minutes' walk of each other, which makes bar-hopping realistic on foot. The area is compact and well lit. You do not need to take a car between the main venues.

The character of these bars varies. Some are relaxed neighbourhood spots with a pool table and cheap drinks. Others are proper nightclubs with production-level sound and international DJs on circuit event weekends. The same venue can feel very different on a Tuesday afternoon versus a Saturday night during Winter Party.

Pool bar and daytime culture

One thing Miami has that most other cities do not is genuine pool-bar culture. Several hotels with gay followings have pool areas that function as social scenes during the day, particularly on weekends. The crowd that might not show up at a nightclub until 1am is already out and social by noon at a pool party. This is a real part of the Miami gay experience, not just a hotel amenity. Shorts and sunscreen are the dress code.

Some pool parties are open events that anyone can buy a day pass for. Others are tied to specific hotels and require a room booking or a ticket for a specific event. During circuit weekends the pool parties are as central as the club nights.

Nightclub timing

Miami nightclubs run late by any standard. Arriving before midnight is considered early. The main crowds build from midnight to 2am and clubs can run until 5am or later on weekend nights. During Winter Party and White Party, outdoor events and after-parties can stretch until morning. If you are going to the clubs, budget your energy and sleep accordingly.

    • Club Space — Named "#1 Late Night Club in Miami," this is a club for serious night life aficionados. Huge, glamorous and decadent, Club Space is a classic mega-club with an anything-goes vibe and the best sound system in town. Although it is not a "gay club," Space hosts occasional gay events, including White Party Weekend parties. (Helpful hint: parking is complicated, so take a cab.)

Practical notes

Drinks are expensive by US standards. Budget $15-20 for a cocktail in the main venues. Some bars have happy hours in the early evening. Cover charges apply at the clubs on weekends, more so during events. The main streets in the gay area are safe at night. Standard city sense applies.
