📸 הצע תמונותLe Must is the most prominent entry on Abidjan's discreet LGBTQ+ social map, a bar in the Cocody district that has built its reputation over years through a combination of relaxed management, a cosmopolitan crowd, and an understood tolerance that makes it the closest thing the city has to a visible gay-friendly venue. It does not advertise its LGBTQ+-welcoming character ? no rainbow branding, no explicit programming ? but within Abidjan's LGBTQ+ community and among international visitors who have done their research, Le Must is the starting point. The Cocody location is significant: this is Abidjan's upscale residential and hotel quarter, the zone where the city's French-educated professional class, diplomatic community, and international visitors concentrate. The social codes here are more cosmopolitan than in other parts of the city, which provides a degree of informal cover for LGBTQ+ gatherings that would be harder to sustain in more socially conservative districts. The bar itself has a warm, convivial atmosphere typical of good West African bar culture: conversation-forward, unhurried, with good music and a mixed crowd that on weekend evenings includes a significant LGBTQ+ contingent. For first-time visitors to Abidjan, Le Must provides the social foundation from which connections to the rest of the community can be built. Exercise appropriate discretion: this remains Abidjan, not Paris. Public affection is inadvisable even within the venue's broadly tolerant environment. Come, have a drink, make connections, and read the social cues of the crowd.
