Qalerея ("Gallery") Bar sits inside the walled medieval quarter of Icherisheher — Baku's old city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — occupying a ground-floor space in a restored stone building close to the Shirvanshahs' Palace. The location is both its defining characteristic and the reason for its particular atmosphere: inside the old city walls, the sense of Baku as a modern petro-state recedes and the bar attracts a clientele that skews toward the arts and cultural world — painters, architects, writers, and the international visitors who pass through the old city during the day and come back in the evenings. Within Baku's LGBTQ+ community, Qalerея is known to community members as a space where a quiet, artistically-minded crowd makes the environment less hostile than most. The bar's management has not been hostile to gay patrons who behave with the discretion that the environment demands. This does not make it a safe space by any standard definition; it makes it one of the city's more manageable options for a drink in a pleasant setting for travellers who understand the constraints. The old city location means it is easily combined with a daytime visit to the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs' Palace, making an evening drink here a natural extension of the cultural programme rather than a separately organised LGBTQ+ outing. Arrive with people you already know. Keep behaviour entirely conventional. The atmosphere is literary and unhurried; local wine and Azerbaijani tea are the appropriate orders.
