Springfield is western Massachusetts's largest city — a rustbelt manufacturing city on the Connecticut River with a diverse population. The LGBTQ+ scene is modest but the region has a strong queer history, being close to Northampton (one of the gayest small towns in America).
Springfield Venues
- Oz Bar Springfield — Springfield's main gay bar; drag shows, dance floor, and a welcoming mixed LGBTQ+ crowd. The anchor of the city's gay nightlife.
- The Hippodrome — entertainment venue that hosts LGBTQ+ events periodically; check the calendar for current programming.
Northampton — The Real Destination
20 minutes north of Springfield — Northampton (locally "Noho") is disproportionately significant for its size. Home to Smith College and five other colleges in the Pioneer Valley, it's been a lesbian and queer cultural hub since the 1980s. Northampton has multiple gay bars (including Diva's Nightclub), excellent restaurants, independent bookshops including Pride and Joy, and a genuinely visible LGBTQ+ community walking the streets at all hours. Northampton Pride is in May and is one of New England's most celebratory events.
Pioneer Valley Region
The Connecticut River valley — Northampton, Amherst, Greenfield — has been a queer-friendly region for decades, driven by the Five College consortium (Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, UMass Amherst). If you're based in Springfield for affordability, Northampton is an easy drive for the actual queer cultural scene.
