Gay Nightlife in Basel: A Party-Based Scene
Basel is a wealthy, walkable Swiss city on the Rhine with a small but genuine LGBTQ+ life. It does not currently have a dedicated gay bar: the city's long-standing gay venue at Rebgasse 39 in Kleinbasel — known for decades as Elle et Lui and latterly as L39 — closed after a fire in 2019 and has not been replaced. Instead, Basel's queer nightlife runs on recurring party series hosted at mainstream and alternative venues, plus a couple of reliably gay-friendly bars and the city's one gay sauna.
The Queer Party Series (the real scene)
These monthly and weekly nights are where you'll actually find the community. Dates shift, so confirm on habs.ch, basel.com or freiburg.pink before heading out:
- Back4More — a queer 80s/90s/2000s dance party on the first Saturday of the month at Heimat in Kleinbasel. The strongest and best-attended gay party in town.
- ZischBar — Basel's weekly LGBTQ+ apéro and meeting point, every Tuesday from around 6pm at KaBar in the Kaserne cultural centre.
- pink.friday — a queer film-and-social evening on the last Friday of the month at kult.kino, with a bar from early evening.
- Queerhaus Bar — a monthly gay cocktail night with DJs at Sudhaus.
Gay-Friendly Fixed Venues
Hirscheneck (Lindenberg 23, Kleinbasel) is an alternative, collectively-run restaurant, bar and music venue that has operated since 1979. It has a strong queer core clientele and regularly hosts homo dance parties and lesbian/trans discos — the closest thing Basel has to a permanent queer-adjacent hangout.
Bar Rouge, the cocktail skybar on the 31st floor of the Messeturm, has an explicit LGBTQ+ inclusive policy and flies the rainbow flag; it's an upscale mixed venue rather than a gay bar, but a reliable, welcoming stop with a view.
Club Borderline is a mainstream nightclub that hosts occasional dedicated gay parties — worth checking its programme when you're in town.
Sauna
Basel's only permanent exclusively-gay establishment is Sunnyday, a gay sauna and cruise club on Grenzacherstrasse in Kleinbasel, combining Finnish and steam saunas, a jacuzzi and relaxation areas with an extensive cruising section. See our Basel gay saunas page for details.
Where the Scene Is
Kleinbasel — the right bank of the Rhine, around the Rebgasse and Klybeckstrasse — is the heart of Basel's LGBTQ+ life, home to the party venues, Checkpoint Basel and the end point of the annual Pride Walk. The city is compact and the BVB tram/bus network makes it easy to get around.
Practical Tips
For dedicated gay clubs, most locals take the train to Zurich (about one hour). Basel's own Pride, "Basel tickt bunt!", takes place each year in late June with a Pride Walk from the Kunstmuseum Basel to Holzpark Klybeck. Switzerland is exceptionally safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ visitors; same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 2022. As anywhere, use normal discretion late at night in parks and quiet areas.
