Eau Claire's LGBTQ+ Nightlife
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is a mid-sized college town rather than a big-city party destination, but it does have a genuine gay nightlife anchor. The scene is small and centered downtown, where you can find a welcoming place to dance, catch a drag show, or just grab a relaxed drink among a friendly, mixed crowd.
Scooters — Eau Claire's Gay Bar
The heart of LGBTQ+ nightlife in Eau Claire is Scooters, at 411 Galloway Street. Open since 1997, it is one of Wisconsin's longest-running gay bars and the city's only dedicated LGBTQ+ nightspot. It has been a fixture of the local community for more than a quarter century.
Scooters keeps things unpretentious and fun: DJ dancing on Friday and Saturday nights, regular drag shows, and karaoke midweek. Drink prices are reasonable and the staff are known for being warm and welcoming, which has earned it a loyal following and repeated nods as a local favorite place to dance. Whether you're a resident or just passing through the Chippewa Valley, it's the reliable spot to meet people and feel at home.
Beyond Scooters
Eau Claire's LGBTQ+ social life extends beyond a single bar. Downtown venues host queer-friendly events throughout the year — for example, The Plus (208 S Barstow Street), a restaurant and live-music venue, hosts a popular drag brunch. Many of the city's independent bars, breweries, and restaurants along Water Street and Barstow Street are welcoming to LGBTQ+ patrons, even if they aren't gay-specific.
Pride and Community
The biggest LGBTQ+ event of the year is Chippewa Valley Pride in the Park, held each June at Phoenix Park and organized by the Chippewa Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center. A companion drag show, LEGACY, takes place nearby the same month. The Community Center (cvlgbt.org) and the UW-Eau Claire Gender and Sexuality Resource Center are good sources for current events and pop-up nights.
Tips for Your Night Out
Downtown Eau Claire is walkable, and rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is available for venues farther out. Dress is casual. Most bars are 21+, so bring valid ID. For a bigger night out, Minneapolis-St. Paul (about 90 minutes west) offers a much larger cluster of dedicated gay bars.
