Gay Bars in Cairns: The Honest Version

Cairns has no gay bar or gay nightclub. We checked Travel Gay, misterb&b, Queensland's tourism site, the Star Observer, local news and the venues' own websites, and none of them names a dedicated LGBTQ+ bar open in the city in 2026. Travel Gay puts it bluntly: "Cairns itself doesn't have any specific gay bars or nightclubs." So this page has no listings, and we'd rather tell you that than pad it with ordinary pubs.

Where queer Cairns actually goes

People go out at mainstream bars in the CBD, along Lake, Shields and Spence Streets and on the Esplanade. A 2023 Queer in the World roundup named the waterfront Flamingos Tiki Bar, the cocktail bar Three Wolves on Spence Street and the casino's BAR36 as friendly places to drink. They're straight bars where nobody will blink at a same-sex couple, not gay bars, and none runs a regular queer night that we could confirm. We also found no regular drag show or drag bingo in 2025 or 2026.

The one LGBTQ+ venue in the CBD is Cruise Club Cairns at 30 Spence Street, a men-only cruise club open daily 10:00 to 22:00. It has a small bar and lounge, but it's a cruise club, not a place for a night out.

Pride is when the scene shows up

The Cairns Pride Festival runs from 9 to 25 October 2026. In 2025 its parties used mainstream venues: The Cotton Club on Shields Street, Salthouse for trivia, and O'Sheas on the Waterfront in Machans Beach for the 18+ Tropical Pride Party with drag. Check the festival's social pages for this year's venues.

Closed or changed

    • Out Front Bar: called "Cairns' only LGBT venue" by the Star Observer, closed for good in 2011.
    • Sapphire Bar: closed in 2009.
    • Head Office CBD: an older cruise club and shop on McLeod Street, marked closed by Travel Gay.

Some directories, including an older version of this page, listed mainstream venues as gay bars. THE VOID (39 Lake St) is a techno and psytrance rave club, Cock & Bull in Cairns North is an English-style sports pub, Covergirls is a showgirl club and Xclusive is a hip hop and R&B club. All four are open, but none is a gay venue, so we've taken them off this page.

The nearest gay bar

The SandBar at Turtle Cove Beach Resort in Wangetti, about 35 to 40 km north, is the bar Travel Gay and Queensland's tourism site point gay visitors to. It's inside an adults-only LGBTQIA+ resort that was put up for sale in 2026, so check it's open before you drive up.
