Same-sex relations are legal in Bulgaristan, but social attitudes vary and public displays of affection can attract negative attention. Same-sex activity has been legal in Bulgaria since 1968, with an equal age of consent and protection from discrimination by sexual orientation. There is no marriage or partnership recognition, a 2024 law bans school "LGBT propaganda", and legal gender change is blocked. Big-city centres are generally safe for visitors, but public affection between men draws attention. Major cities and international tourist areas are usually more welcoming than smaller towns and rural areas.
No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Bulgaristan. Same-sex sexual activity legal since 1968; equal age of consent. No marriage or civil partnership - the Constitution (Art. 46) defines marriage as a man-woman union. The 2023 ECHR ruling Koilova & Babulkova v. Bulgaria obliges Bulgaria to create legal recognition for same-sex couples, but none exists. Anti-discrimination law covers sexual orientation (since 2004). A 2023 Supreme Court ruling barred legal gender change, and in August 2024 Parliament banned "LGBT propaganda" in schools.
