Buža Bar is the most famous bar in Dubrovnik and one of the most dramatically situated drinking spots in Europe — a cliff-side venue carved into the rock of the promontory outside the Old City walls, with platforms suspended above the Adriatic and an unobstructed view of the open sea to the southwest. The name means 'hole in the wall' in Croatian, referencing the small gap in the city walls through which you exit to reach the bar. Buža is not a gay bar, but it is a firmly gay-friendly one — the international tourist demographic that discovers it through Dubrovnik's tourist economy is diverse, and the bar's atmosphere of wonder at its own setting transcends social divisions. Arriving for sunset — when the limestone of the Old City walls glows golden and the sea turns deep blue below the platform — is one of the great experiences Dubrovnik offers any visitor, LGBTQ+ or otherwise. Come early in summer: the platform fills quickly and the views are worth the wait.
