Frequently asked questions about LGBTQ+ travel in Gürcistan
Same-sex relations are legal in Gürcistan, but social attitudes vary and public displays of affection can attract negative attention. Major cities and international tourist areas are usually more welcoming than smaller towns and rural areas.
No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Gürcistan. Georgia decriminalised same-sex relations in 2000, passed an anti-discrimination law covering sexual orientation and gender identity in 2014 as an EU visa condition, and made bias an aggravating factor in crimes in 2012. It has since reversed course. The 2018 constitution defines marriage as between a woman and a man. In September 2024 Parliament passed the Russian-style 'Family Values and Protection of Minors' law, in force since December 2024: it bans 'LGBT propaganda' in media, schools and public life, prohibits public gatherings that promote same-sex relationships, bars adoption and fostering by LGBTQ people, blocks gender-affirming procedures and recording a changed gender on documents, with fines for individuals and organisations and prison terms of up to two years for some offences. Tbilisi Pride was attacked by far-right mobs in 2021 and forced to cancel in 2023, and its organisers said the law would close them; trans model Kesaria Abramidze was murdered the day after the final vote. Over 80 percent of Georgians say same-sex relations are wrong. Tbilisi still has a few bars and the famous Bassiani club nights where the community gathers, and foreign visitors are not targeted, but any public display is now a legal as well as a physical risk.
