Gay Moldova

No — same-sex marriage is not currently recognised in Moldova. Moldova decriminalised same-sex relations in 1995 and the 1994 constitution bans same-sex marriage; there is no partnership recognition and no adoption for same-sex couples. Where it has moved is anti-discrimination: a 2012 employment law was followed by Law No. 2 of 2023, which added sexual orientation and gender identity as protected grounds across goods, services and all other areas as part of EU accession reforms, lifting Moldova from last place on ILGA-Europe's map in 2012 to 23rd in 2023. Legal gender change is possible but requires a psychiatric diagnosis. Chișinău Pride was banned or attacked every year from 2007 to 2017 and has marched with police protection since 2018. Public opinion remains hostile, with over 90 percent telling a 2017 Pew survey that homosexuality should not be accepted, and the Orthodox Church leads the opposition. Chișinău has a small community centre run by GENDERDOC-M and a couple of friendly bars. Visitors are safe and rarely noticed; local activists carry the real risk.
