Ophelia's Restaurant & Inn

We had a lovely brunch (on Saturday) and lunch. The salads were lovely full of great fresh ingredients. The French onion soup was great as well. My daughter had one of the brunch plates. The prices were reasonable for a nice restaurant. Service was great and the coffee is a custom blend (you can buy a bag). The menu included brunch (on weekends) appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees including salmon, steak frites, and chicken.

So this is more of a cautionary tale—ASK ahead of time about special seating arrangements on special days like Mother’s Day this in case there are some overflow seating plans that might affect the experience. The ambiance was disappointing after I had heard so many good things about this place —mainly because we had a large crowd (7 in our group) on Mother’s Day, so that meant that we were seated in their back room, not in the regular dining room. Some nice posters on the walls in the back room, but there were about a dozen plastic banquet tables with folding chairs to handle the large crowd for Mother’s Day. The food was good, but some buffet items were a bit picked over since we were one of the last reservations. All of that is understandable to handle a busy day like Mother’s Day, but overall a bit underwhelming for a buffet that cost almost $50 each (not including drinks).

We had visited the Truman library which was very informative and a word while place to visit, when we decided to find a place to have lunch. We happened on Ophelia and although the location seems to be in an urban renewal district that not yet quite succeeded, we were totally surprised by the upscale interior and ambiance. The menu was creative and our dishes were very tasty. Notable the onion soup was traditional and by my standard perfect. The chef managed to serve it with the traditional slice of bread slightly crunchy, which made it extra wonderful. The old saying applies, “try it you like it”.

Touring the town after site seeing the Truman home we came across Ophelia’s. I will start by saying this is the best accidental find I have come across in a while! The interior is clean and cozy and the food was exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed everything from the sourdough bread with pumpkin butter to our steak and chicken. Thank you for the culinary experience!

We left happy with a pleasant meal. Good food. Good service. Nothing exceptional. In all honesty, I probably would have been willing to give 5 stars if it wasn't for the prices. The food and atmosphere were good, but maybe not mandating the price. Also, the menu was limited. Besides steaks, only seven other entrees.

This Inn is primarily a restaurant. There are rooms upstairs but it is almost an afterthought(there is no one there from 9pm-9am). The rooms are ok but could use some updating. The location is right on the main square in Independence. Walkable to the Truman Library, Truman Home, and other historical sites. Note that the square is undergoing major renovations which means dust and noise. There is also construction on the Inn itself. The restaurant is good and the service was nice. There are other restaurants nearby as well. Great location for exploring Independence.

My friends and I stopped in for lunch on Saturday. Very nice decor, in a historic building on the Independence square. Gill our waiter was super attentive even though he was very busy with a lot of tables. He told us a lot of people had come in to eat all at the same time. Also that there were only two people working in the kitchen. It did seem to take a while to get our food but since we weren't in a hurry it didn't bother us. My club sandwich was very big and very good. I took half home and my husband liked it too. My friends both got the Cubano and said it was excellent. I would definitely go back again.

Very disappointed with our lunch visit today after rav review from longtime friends based on past visit. We arrived at 12:15pm on a Saturday and were promptly seated. Not crowded with maybe only 5-6 other parties in the restaurant. Had our drink orders taken and then had our full order (party of 4) taken. It took about 25 minutes for one salad and a bowl of lukewarm soup brought out. No sign of our entrees by 1:00pm. Several other parties who had arrived after us got there food before us. We found our waiter Gill. He came back and said 3 of the 4 items were ready in the window but not sure why my burger wasn’t ready. We said go on and bring the 3 now and the 4th when it was ready. Finally by 1:30pm my burger was brought out. Average tasting food all around. In addition to extremely slow service, two of us were “upcharged” $2.00 each for the special fries that were very tough and “uneasy”. Didn’t realize the upcharge until after we had paid. This was our first visit to town. Pricey by far.

Just returned home from Independence. We found people very friendly and we're truly impressed with the inn and restaurant personnel making our anniversary very special. Thank you, Stephanee and your staff.

The restaurant is located on Main Street in downtown Independence. We had lunch. The menu includes salads, sandwiches, and some plates with a nice twist. We visited on a sunny day and enjoyed our food outside. The food was excellent and also we enjoyed very good service. Prices were fair.
