Fascinating 19th century graveyard. It is the resting place for many notable figures from the past including the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell. It also contains the remains of the sailors from the ill fated Dunbar. Certainly needs some restoration before more of the grave stones become illegible. It is allegedly haunted by Hannah Watson who leaves her tomb at night to visit the nearby grave of her lover Captain Staines who died on the Dunbar. Entry is free but it is closed on Saturdays and after 5 at night. (I would not like to visit at night anyway !)
Located a couple of blocks to the north of King Street, the Camperdown Cemetery sits in the south eastern corner of the Camperdown Memorial Rest Park. Entry to the cemetery is via Church Street as the other sides are surrounded by a high stone wall. Entry is also free. There is a wide array of headstones and a great deal of history. It is well worth a visit if in the area.
It provides an insight to the history of the growth of the City/Australia. It is reasonably tidy but is beginning to deteriorate by not being properly treated. We had and evening of a jazz concert in the church yard, two hours of entertainment well attended 1800/2000hrs.
This old cemetery in front of an Anglican Church has been lifted right out of old England. Tumbled tombstones from the 19th Century, weeds growing up, huge trees. Weird and tranquil.
Hidden off the main drag of King Street, this historic cemetery is well worth a stroll. The paths aren't well kept, so watch your step. But you'll want to take your time reading the headstones anyway. Afterwards, head a little further down Church Street to the beautiful park. It was once part of the cemetery too, but is now a lovely open space perfect for picnics.
This tranquil Church yard of St Stephens, Newtown is the last resting place of the early settlers of the city. The cemetery was founded in 1848 and was for twenty years the main general cemetery for Sydney, with the total number of burials being about 18,000. Many people who were important to the early history of colonial Australia are buried there, including those who perished in the wreck of the Dunbar. St Stephen's Cemetery is associated with several reputed ghosts and a murder. This is a very important historical place for the city.
Evokes many questions and thoughts as you stroll around. Great to see the place being actively used and enjoyed by so many. Also nice to learn that it has strong support fr the local Friends group. Had a laugh at the beehives now sharing the site right next to some of the graves by the house!
Worth a visit with graves from the mid-19th century, of famous colonial people and the memorial and remains of the wreck of the Dunbar. Also a Victorian Gothic revival church designed by Edmund Blackett. They have guided tours which are worth going on as more detail is given. Unfortunately many graves have been vandalised over the century and a half, but still worth visiting if you're in the neighbourhood.
An interesting old cemetary, just off King st Newtown, so easy to access. Some beautiful and intriguing old graves, a peaceful and beautiful place to visit.
Very interesting walking around the head stones. Be very easy to spend a few hours here. Some headstones are unreadable.
Beautiful sunsets
Been goinig here since I was little. The cafe store right by it is awesome to have while taking a walk through the park. The park bit is so fun along with the football field and everything there.
