Marea Alta is a small queer bar on Gumpendorfer Straße in Vienna's 6th district. It leans towards a lesbian crowd but draws a mixed gay, lesbian and queer clientele, and reviewers consistently mention friendly staff. Weeknights are low-key: a drink, conversation, music you can talk over. On Fridays and Saturdays it opens at 7pm and runs until 4am, and the downstairs room turns into a compact dance floor. It is not a big club, but it is one of the easier places in central Vienna to go from bar to dancing without changing venue. Monday to Thursday it opens at 6pm and closes at 2am; it is closed Sundays.

Unfortunately this is not a safe space!, very drunk transwomen are still served alcohol, when they can't even stand straight and are taken care of by other costumers on the dance floor. And people screaming sexist insults are accepted inside and infront of this bar. It makes me incredibly sad that such behaviour is tolerated

Marea Alta feels like the Star Wars cantina crash-landed in Vienna and decided to serve cheap drinks. It’s chaotic in the best way: funny creatures, random great conversations, and a bartender who always looks like he just smelled something suspicious, but is actually a sweetheart. The drinks are fun and cheap, the vibe is wonderfully weird, and when they open the underground downstairs it suddenly turns into a mini intergalactic nightclub. You go in for one drink… and somehow end up dancing with aliens. Highly recommended.
