Gay-Friendly Hotels in Antwerp
Antwerp has no gay hotels: every place below is a mainstream hotel, and in Belgium, where discrimination is illegal and same-sex couples have married since 2003, you shouldn't need one. What matters is location. The gay bars are spread across three pockets: the old town (Café Twilight, Café DeLux, Cut), Falconrui and the Schipperskwartier north of the centre (Café Hessenhuis, Red & Blue at Cargo Club, The Boots, Club Random) and Zurenborg (Café Den Draak at Het Roze Huis). The only gay sauna, 't Herenhuis, is in Berchem.
Old town: for the bars and the sights
Hilton Antwerp Old Town fills the old Grand Bazar department store on the Groenplaats, facing the cathedral, and is the most central large hotel in the city. HotelO Kathedral is a small design hotel right beside the cathedral on the Handschoenmarkt. Hotel Julien is a quiet boutique hotel on Korte Nieuwstraat, and Sapphire House Antwerp (Autograph Collection) is a Marriott Autograph Collection hotel in a converted bank on Lange Nieuwstraat. Motel One Antwerpen on the Oever by the Scheldt quays is the good-value design option. All are within a ten-minute walk of Café Twilight, Café DeLux and Cut.
Eilandje and the Schipperskwartier: for the late venues
SKIPR Hotel on Sint-Pietersvliet sits between the old town and the docks, and U Hotel is in a converted building on Nassaustraat near the MAS. From either, Café Hessenhuis and Cargo Club are a short walk, and The Boots and Club Random are about 15 minutes on foot.
Around Antwerpen-Centraal: for trains
If you're arriving from Brussels Airport (about 35 minutes by direct train) or doing day trips, stay by the station. Radisson Blu Hotel, Antwerp City Centre and Park Inn by Radisson Antwerp City Centre face the station on Koningin Astridplein; Lindner Hotel Antwerp – JDV by Hyatt is a few minutes away on Lange Kievitstraat; Maek Hotel Antwerp Central (now the Maek Hotel) overlooks the Stadspark; Citybox Antwerp is a self-service budget option near the Opera, and a&o Hostel Antwerpen Centraal (now an a&o hostel-hotel) is the cheapest bed opposite the station. From here the old-town bars are 20 minutes on foot or a short tram ride.
Zurenborg and Berchem
Via Antwerp is an aparthotel on Plantin en Moretuslei, about ten minutes' walk from Draakplaats and Café Den Draak, and a short tram ride from 't Herenhuis sauna in Berchem.
Tips
- Book early for Antwerp Pride (early August) and Beyond Darklands (16-22 February 2027), when central hotels fill up.
- The whole city is a low-emission zone: if you drive a foreign-registered car, register it online before you arrive, or use a park-and-ride.
- Many gay bars close on Monday and Tuesday, so plan a weekend stay if nightlife is the point.
