Zum Schiffchen on Hafenstrasse is usually described as Düsseldorf's oldest restaurant, with roots going back to the 1600s and a long-told story that Napoleon ate here. It is a traditional brewery-tavern: heavy Rhineland dishes, wood-panelled rooms and Alt beer served the local way, with the waiter replacing your glass until you put a coaster on top. It is a mainstream, gay-friendly restaurant, not a gay venue. It sits at the southern edge of the Altstadt, so it is easy to combine with a walk along the Rhine. Reviews are mixed (3.6 on Google), with service and prices the usual complaints.

All in all, pretty cool. There's just one young guy who hasn't had the chance to experience true friendliness. He probably just lacks the energy to reply to a "please," "thank you," or "goodbye." Unfortunately, people like that annoy me too much; I got the feeling he thought he was better than everyone else. He should work on that.
