Café 't Mandje opened on the Zeedijk in 1927 under Bet van Beeren, a lesbian landlady who welcomed gay men and women at a time when few bars did. After her death in 1967 her family kept it going until 1982, and it reopened in 2008 run by her niece. It is a small brown café, and the ceiling and walls are covered with old photos and the ties that regulars cut off over the decades. It is mixed and friendly, a mainly gay and lesbian crowd with tourists coming in for the history, and prices are low. It is closed on Monday, opens from 15:00 the rest of the week and stays open until 03:00 at weekends. It is cramped, so come early in the evening if you want a seat. The Warmoesstraat leather bars are around the corner.

I was part of the ace group who visited last week for a quiz we were doing. We were given an excellent detailed history of the establishment by the friendly staff there and it sounded like such an amazing place. The atmosphere inside was so nice too. I really wanted to come back and spend time here later in my vacation, but unfortunately my schedule just didn't allow that. Despite this, I am very appreciative of the time and effort the host spent in teaching us about the venue and I would encourage anyone reading this to pay a visit.
