The Cuckoo's Nest has run as a men's cruise bar on Nieuwezijds Kolk since 1984. The format has barely changed: a normal bar at street level and a labyrinth of cabins in the cellar. It draws a leather-and-jeans crowd and opens at 13:00, so the afternoon is as much part of its rhythm as the late night. It closes at 01:00, or 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Bears Amsterdam is two minutes away on Sint Jacobsstraat, so this corner of the centre works as the cruisier alternative to Reguliersdwarsstraat. Have a drink upstairs first if you're new; the cellar is self-explanatory.

They don't allow transvestites, trans women, or any men with a feminine appearance into the darkroom. Just so you know, this isn't criticism, just a heads-up. You can come in for a drink, but you can't go down to the darkroom. Beers are €4 to €7, cloakroom is €1.50, but only men (including trans men) who look like men are allowed in the darkroom.

Extremely disappointed with this place. I thought an LGBT bar of all places would be inclusive and liberal, but apparently, that doesn’t extend to everyone. I was denied entry just because I had my dog with me. Let’s be clear: this is a bar, not a crowded nightclub where bringing a pet would obviously be inappropriate. It’s a casual spot where you should be able to just walk in and have a quick drink. Turning away customers for such a ridiculous reason is not a good look. If you claim to represent a welcoming and open community, act like it. Won't be coming back

The place can be fun when there at the right moment. Staff mostly really nice and welcoming. But at the cruising area juat old locals there every single day. They enter buying one drink and stay there many hours. Too many loosers there. It is a shame for this kind of place which is hard to find in AMS nowadays.
