The honest summary: Melbourne has three gay saunas and one cruise club. The two in town, Subway in the CBD and Wet on Wellington in Collingwood, are the busy ones. Peninsula Sauna is a 40-minute drive or a train ride south-east in Seaford. Victorian law calls all of these "sex-on-premises venues" (SOPVs), and they are legal and licensed.
Subway Sauna (CBD)
Subway Sauna is in Vault 13 under the railway viaduct at 397 Flinders Street, between Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations. It is open 24 hours, seven days a week, for gay and bisexual men.
- Facilities (per its website): steam room, dry sauna, spa, about 30 serviced rooms plus private rooms, two cruise areas, video lounges, and a café and bar. It was recently renovated.
- Prices when we checked (October 2026): $30 on weekdays and $32 from Friday noon to Monday midnight. Tuesday is $25, Wednesday is two for $50, and Thursday is a bear night at $27. Public holidays are $40. A ticket is valid for 24 hours, and concessions and a five-hour pass-out are available.
- Reviews: 3.1 on Google from about 120 reviews. Most complaints are about upkeep.
- Facilities: a 25-metre lap pool, spa, steam room, dry sauna, rooftop terrace and a licensed bar.
- Hours: noon to 2am Monday to Thursday, then around the clock from Friday noon through the weekend.
- Prices (from 2 March 2026): Monday to Thursday it's $24 by day, $29 in the evening and $15 late. Friday to Sunday it's $34, public holidays $40, and a five-visit card costs $130.
- Know before you go: it's cash only, with an ATM inside, and photo ID is scanned at the door. The calendar has bear, daddy, under-30s and nude nights, plus a few couples events. Not every night is men only, so check the calendar if that matters to you.
- Spartacus Lounge at Level 1, 20 Waratah Place in the CBD is a cruise club with cruising areas, small private cabins and glory holes, open 9am to 11pm daily. According to its site, it is busiest at lunchtime and after 5pm.
- LCKR ROOM at 95 Smith Street, under the UBQ bar, runs late cruise and party nights. Check its calendar, because it doesn't open every night.
- Club 80 (10 Peel St, Collingwood; earlier on Commercial Rd): closed around April 2020 after the building was sold for redevelopment.
- Bay City Sauna (St Kilda): closed in December 2022 over structural problems with the building.
- "Steamworks Melbourne": we found no such venue. The Steamworks name belongs to saunas in other cities.
- EDEN (Smith St): it shows up on Google as a gay sauna, but it's a party night, not a sauna.
Wet on Wellington (Collingwood)
Wet on Wellington at 162 Wellington Street is one of the largest gay saunas in Australia, and a five-minute walk from the Smith Street bars.
Peninsula Sauna & Spa (Seaford)
Peninsula Sauna & Spa is at 16 Cumberland Drive, Seaford, about 40km south-east of the CBD near Frankston. Seaford station on the Frankston line is the closest train. It opens at noon daily. It has a large spa, dry sauna, steam room, a dungeon, sling rooms and a glory-hole room. Entry is from $20 Monday to Thursday and $25 Friday to Sunday. Wednesday and Sunday afternoon are nude sessions. It is cash only, with ID scanned at the door.

Etiquette and health
Bring photo ID, since all three saunas scan it. No means no. Free condoms and lube are usually at the desk. Thorne Harbour Health's PRONTO! clinic in Abbotsford does rapid HIV and STI testing if you want a check-up while you're in town.
