Gay Sauna in Ottawa: The Honest 2026 Guide

Last verified: October 2026 · Compiled from venue checks and local and international sources from 2025–2026 · Report a change

Ottawa is a bilingual government town on the Ottawa River: the Peace Tower carillon ringing over Parliament Hill, the Gatineau Hills turning red and gold across the water in October, French on one bank and English on the other. Walk west along Wellington Street, past the new Thunderhead monument glittering by the river path, and the ministries give way to Hintonburg: bars, restaurants, galleries and the Parkdale Market. Here, at 1069 Wellington Street West, is the city's one gay bathhouse. Ottawa's sauna scene is small and old-school: Club Ottawa, a handful of bars in Centretown and the ByWard Market, and Montreal two hours down the road.

Legal in one line: Canada has had nationwide same-sex marriage since 2005, and sexual orientation and gender identity are protected from discrimination. Bathhouses are legal private venues for adults; sex in a public place is not (it's an "indecent act" under the Criminal Code). The drinking age is 19 in Ontario and 18 across the river in Quebec.

Club Ottawa: the city's only gay bathhouse

Club Ottawa, at 1069 Wellington Street West (K1Y 2Y2) in Hintonburg, is a men-only bathhouse, and every directory we checked (Travel Gay, misterb&b, Out x Out) lists it as Ottawa's only one. Expect a basic, no-frills working men's club rather than a spa.

    • Facilities: the club's own website lists lockers, private rooms, a steam room and showers. Directory listings and visitors add a dry sauna (a reviewer called it large), a sling room, a big mattress room, a video lounge, glory holes, and free condoms and towels. Some listings mention a whirlpool; check before you count on it.
    • Hours (official website): Monday to Wednesday 10:00 to midnight, then non-stop from Thursday at 10:00 until Sunday at 23:00.
    • Prices (official website, eight hours): locker CA$27; single room $34; single room with video $38; double bed $44; deluxe room with TV $48; sling room $58. "Freshman" rates for 18 to 24-year-olds: $15 for a locker, $19 for a single room.
    • Special: "Weekday Morning Wood", a four-hour locker for $15 if you arrive between 10:00 and noon on weekdays.
    • Theme nights: the website mentions "special event nights" without a schedule; listings describe a rotating Thursday programme, including a monthly Blackout night and bear nights.

ID: the website doesn't spell out its door policy, but the youth rates depend on age and Canadian bathhouses commonly ask for photo ID, so bring yours.

Know before you go: reviews are mixed and mostly a few years old. Visitors praise the polite door staff, the dry sauna and the spacious showers, and describe a mostly mature, multicultural crowd, with men of all ages. Others complain about cleanliness, hot water and price. Travel Gay notes it's "a little far from downtown and not hugely busy", but it can pick up at weekends; listings also point to weekday afternoons. The website carries no update date, so call 613-722-8978 to check hours and prices.

A piece of history: on 22 May 1976, Ottawa police raided the Club Baths at this same address, 1069 Wellington Street, arresting 27 men and seizing a membership list of more than 3,000 names. It was the city's first bathhouse raid, part of a wider "clean-up" around the Montreal Summer Olympics. Gays of Ottawa protested at a press conference and outside police headquarters, and the Ottawa Citizen chose not to publish the men's names. Under a deal, the charges against most of the customers were withdrawn once the owner had stood trial as a "keeper". By the 1990s the club was operating as Club Ottawa, part of the "Club" chain, and it is still there today.

Closed: Steamworks for Men (the Lewis Street Sauna), at 487 Lewis Street in Centretown, was evicted when the building's owner decided to demolish it. The Edge Sauna, which opened in 2007 above the Edge nightclub at 63 Bank Street, briefly went co-ed in 2009 and then closed. Older guides may still list either one.

    What about Gatineau?

Across the Portage Bridge, Gatineau (the old Hull) is in Quebec, a short drive from Parliament. We searched in English and French (sauna gai Gatineau, sauna gay Hull) and found no gay sauna there today: Travel Gay and misterb&b list none, and the spas that come up, like the Nordic spas of the Outaouais, are regular mixed wellness spas, not cruising venues. If you want a bigger bathhouse scene, Montreal is about two hours away by car or train and has several gay saunas.

    Drinks before the sauna

Club Ottawa is a short taxi or Uber ride west of the bars. Ottawa's gay village is the Bank Street Village in Centretown: the city officially recognised it in November 2011, with rainbow "the village" signs at Bank's intersections with Nepean, Somerset and Frank Streets. Capital Pride's street festival takes place here.

    • T's Pub, 323 Somerset Street West: a relaxed village pub with a long bar, a front patio, DJs, some drag, pub food and sport on the big screen. Travel Gay lists it open from 14:00 daily, until midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 02:00 Thursday to Saturday.
    • Swizzles, 246B Queen Street, downtown near the village: known for karaoke, stand-up and game nights, open evenings until 02:00 (closed Tuesdays, according to Travel Gay).
    • Lookout Bar, 41 York Street, upstairs, in the ByWard Market: open for more than 20 years, with a balcony, karaoke on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and drag at weekends. Closed on Mondays.

No outdoor cruising tips here. Some websites still list Ottawa parks as cruising spots. They're public parks used by families, cyclists and joggers, and sex in a public place is a criminal offence in Canada. Ottawa winters are long and cold, too. Club Ottawa is warm, legal and open all weekend; use it, or the apps, instead.

    Practical tips

    • Getting there: the nearest O-Train Line 1 stations to Hintonburg are Tunney's Pasture and Bayview; from either, it's a walk along or near Wellington. Late at night, a taxi or Uber from Centretown or the ByWard Market is quicker.
    • Make a day of Wellington West: the stretch of Wellington Street between Parkdale and Holland Avenues is packed with bars and restaurants, and the Parkdale Market is a few minutes away. Hintonburg is one of Ottawa's hippest neighbourhoods; eat here before the sauna instead of going back downtown.
    • Bring your own: photo ID, PrEP, lube and flip-flops. Condoms are reported free at the club.
    • Apps: Grindr and Scruff are the usual apps; Sniffies is widely used across North America for real-time meet-ups. Meet in a bar first if you're hosting.
    • Winter: from December to March, temperatures regularly fall well below freezing. Dress warmly between venues; a steam room is very welcome on a January night.

    Capital Pride and Thunderhead

Capital Pride (Fierté dans la Capitale) takes over Ottawa in late August. The 2026 festival ran from 22 to 30 August, with a street festival on Bank Street on 29 and 30 August (noon to 20:00) and the Pride Parade on Sunday 30 August from 13:00, running from Booth and Wellington to Bank and Slater, past the Parliament buildings. Olympic hockey player Brianne Jenner was grand marshal. Expect Club Ottawa and the bars to be at their busiest that week.

A week earlier, on 21 August 2026, Thunderhead, Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument, opened just west of Parliament Hill, on the cycling path by the Ottawa River. Its mirrored, disco-ball "cloud" commemorates the LGBT Purge, the federal campaign that pushed an estimated 9,000 people out of the military, the RCMP and the public service from the 1950s into the 1990s. It's close to Wellington Street on the way west from downtown, and worth a stop.

    A few words to know
