SAN is a gay bar and club on Rua Conselheiro Pedro Luiz in Rio Vermelho, the seaside neighbourhood that holds much of Salvador's nightlife. It has several hundred reviews and draws a mostly local crowd who come for drinks and dancing. We have no published hours, so expect a night-time venue that gets going late, mainly at weekends, and check by phone before you make the trip. Rio Vermelho is the easiest part of Salvador for a night out, with bars and acarajé stalls around Largo da Mariquita. Use an app taxi to get back rather than walking the streets late at night.

Terrible drinks. I bought a box for 35 reais, and they gave me a drink in a tall, thin glass with a soda straw, and it was poorly prepared. You could see the Absolut vodka screaming to get out of the glass. A Beats cost R$23.
