Про це місце Archives gaies du Québec

The Archives gaies du Québec is an independent non-profit archive that has been collecting the records of queer life in Quebec since 1983: documents, photographs, periodicals, posters, bar ephemera and personal papers. No university or government runs it. The collections cover the pre-liberation era, the AIDS years and recent activism, and the archive regularly lends material to exhibitions. It is an office suite (201A) in a building on Rue Atateken at the edge of the Village, not a walk-in museum. Researchers, students and anyone curious about Montreal's gay history should contact the archive through its website to book a weekday visit, and say what you are looking for so staff can pull material in advance.

A location I wasn't aware of. However, with all the archives housed there, we can uncover a once-hidden past of Montreal. Exhibitions are generously organized by members, and research assistance is offered free of charge. If you're ever interested in discovering such a past, I recommend you visit at least once in your life.

What a great collection! I went and sat for a few hours looking through 3 or 4 of their boxes full of alphebetized-by-title zines. Some great examples from QC, Canada, and Internationally! Staff were very kind and helpful. Could easily spend hours, (even days) here! Most of their general collection is in French, but most of the zine section (at least of the boxes I looked through) were in English so lots to look at for either language! I booked ahead on their website, and had the option to pre-request materials to view from their online catalog. I chose to just pick a few boxes and see what fate gave me! If you have lots of free time I'd definitely recommend that approach, but otherwise arranging what you'd like to see ahead of time gives you more time to look. *Don't forget to bring some cash if you have it to donate to help fund their operations!*

Great place. Very welcoming and dedicated staff. Impressive archive collection: newspaper articles, books, DVDs, theater programs, posters, etc. However, it's not open often, but they are completely attentive to the customer's needs. The archives are moving to a larger space, which will help make even more material readily available.
