UpStairs Lounge Memorial

I go every year to that spot on the corner and look up at the windows.

Unfortunately, as of April 12th, 2025, the bronze plaque memorializing the lives lost in this tragedy is missing. I can only hope for future visitors that it will be returned. Edit July 2, 2025: There was a rededication of a new plaque this year for pride month! Some other folks have posted some photos. Glad to have it back!

A little hard to find as there is scaffolding over the sidewalk.

The Historic Upstairs Lounge is not a business but an historical marker commemorating the 32 people who died in a fire in 1973. All that remains is a replacement doorway and a large bronze plaque on the sidewalk. The tragic fire burned the staircase, trapping many inside. It is largely thought arson was the cause but no arrests were made and at least three of the bodies remain unidentified till this day.
