The honest summary: Phoenix's men's scene happens indoors. The city has two bathhouses that are open 24 hours, The Chute and Flex Spas, plus a leather bar and a handful of old-school gay dives. Outdoor cruising is a different story. The desert preserves turn up in forum posts from the late 2000s, but we found no current independent source for any outdoor area, Arizona law is clear, and for five months of the year the heat is dangerous in its own right. This guide sticks to what we could verify.

The bathhouses

Phoenix still has two men's clubs, both open around the clock. Both need a membership or day pass and photo ID.

    • Flex Spas Phoenix (1517 S Black Canyon Hwy, west of downtown) is the larger and better equipped: gym, saltwater pool, jacuzzi, steam room, dry sauna, sundeck and private rooms. Weekend nights are busiest.
    • AZ Chute (1440 E Indian School Rd), usually called The Chute, is a private men's club with a small gym, steam room, two video lounges, private cabins and darker play areas. The crowd leans leather, bear and blue-collar.

They are about 20 minutes apart by car. Condoms are available at both front desks, and both have lockers; use them rather than leaving valuables in an open room.

    Bars where men meet

    • Anvil (2424 E Thomas Rd) is Phoenix's leather and Levi bar, with gear nights run with local leather clubs, Undie Monday and a Sunday tea dance.
    • Nu Towne Saloon (5002 E Van Buren St) has been open since 1971 and is the oldest gay bar in the city: a dive with a big patio and a mostly male, mostly local crowd.
    • Pat O's Bunkhouse Saloon (4428 N 7th Ave) is the Melrose District's bear and Levi dive, with pool and darts in a converted house.
    • Charlie's Phoenix (727 W Camelback Rd) draws the biggest crowds and stays open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Coming soon: Barracks, the Palm Springs leather bar, was granted an Arizona liquor licence on 9 July 2026 for 4601 N 7th Avenue. It had not opened when we checked.

    Outdoor areas: what we found

Older guides name desert trailheads in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve and South Mountain as cruising spots. When we checked in November 2026, the only independent mentions of Dreamy Draw were forum threads from more than 15 years ago, and we found nothing at all outside our own past listings for South Mountain, Encanto Park or Papago Park. We also found no reports of police stings at Phoenix parks between 2023 and 2026. So we don't publish any outdoor area as current, and we won't give directions or times.

These are city parks used all day by hikers, runners, families and mountain bikers. Rangers patrol them, and a citation is public record.

    The law, and staying safe

    • Public sexual indecency (ARS 13-1403) covers sexual contact where another person is present who would reasonably be offended. It is a class 1 misdemeanour, punishable by up to six months in jail, and a felony if a minor is present.
    • Indecent exposure (ARS 13-1402) applies on its own, even without contact.
    • Heat: from May to September, daytime temperatures in the preserves pass 105–110°F (40–43°C), with no shade and no water on most trails. Phoenix closes some trails on extreme-heat days. Heat illness kills hikers here every year.
    • Apps: Grindr, Scruff and Sniffies are widely used in Phoenix and are the usual way men connect now. Meet in public first, and tell a friend where you're going.
    • Consent: a clear no ends it, in a club or anywhere else.

    Sexual health

    • Prisma Community Care (1101 N Central Ave, Suite 200) offers HIV and STI testing, PrEP and PEP. It was the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS until January 2025.
    • Lambda Phoenix Center (2622 N 16th St) hosts LGBTQ twelve-step meetings, including Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA), every day.

    What changed recently

    • BS West, Scottsdale's gay bar for 35 years, has closed, so the whole metro scene now sits in Phoenix.
    • Plazma on East Osborn has closed.
    • Barracks has been licensed for 7th Avenue but had not opened by November 2026.
    • We removed the outdoor-spot directions and time windows that earlier versions of this page carried, because we could not verify them.

Frequently asked questions

Is cruising legal in Phoenix?

Being gay and going to gay venues is legal, and the bathhouses are private clubs. Sexual contact in a public place where someone could reasonably be offended is a misdemeanour under ARS 13-1403, and a felony if a minor is present.

Which bathhouse should I choose?

Flex Spas if you want facilities (pool, gym, sundeck) and the broadest crowd; The Chute if you prefer a smaller, rougher leather and bear club. Both are open 24 hours.

Are there outdoor cruising areas?

We couldn't verify any. Old forum posts mention desert trailheads, but there's nothing recent, and these are busy public parks patrolled by rangers. The heat is a real danger for half the year.

Where can I get tested?

Prisma Community Care at the Parsons Center, 1101 N Central Ave, offers HIV and STI testing and PrEP.
