The honest summary: Sacramento has seven gay bars, and five of them are within a two-minute walk of 20th and K Streets in Lavender Heights. You can start at a dive, eat at a queer burger bar and finish on a dance floor without needing a car. The two outliers are a lesbian-listed cocktail lounge north of downtown and a leather bar in North Sacramento. Bars here stop serving at 2am, and every bar on this page is 21+.
The 20th and K block
- Faces Nightclub (2000 K St) opened in 1985 and is the city's biggest gay club, with several bars, more than one dance floor, a patio and a pool. Weekly nights include karaoke, dance parties, a Friday Latin night and early-evening country line dancing on Sundays, and touring Drag Race queens do meet-and-greet shows. Google lists it open daily until 2am from the late afternoon. Expect a cover and a queue on show nights.
- Badlands Sacramento (2003 K St) is the dance and video bar across K Street, with DJs, drag, Latin nights and karaoke. Google lists it open until 2am every day, from 5pm at weekends. It has the same owner as The Depot.
- The Depot (2001 K St) is the neighbourhood bar of the block. The building has been a bar since 1938. Expect pool, a patio, music videos, karaoke and trivia, open from 4pm on weekdays (noon Sunday) until 1:30am. It's the easiest place to start a night.
- Roscoe's Bar & Burgers (2007 K St) is queer-owned and replaced Sidetrax in 2022. It's a bar with a burger kitchen and a drag calendar: Sunday drag brunch, the Velvet Room drag dinner show and piano-bar and karaoke nights. Open Wednesday to Sunday.
- The Mercantile Saloon (1928 L St), known as the Merc, is the oldest gay bar in Lavender Heights, dating from 1976 or 1977. It's cash only, cheap and friendly, with a jukebox and karaoke, and open until 2am daily.
- Teneral Cellars Tasting Room & Wine Lounge (1050 20th St) is a wine lounge, not a gay bar, but it's LGBTQ+ and women-owned and hosts Pride events. Good for a quiet glass before heading to K Street.
- The Flamingo House (2315 K St) is a large mainstream bar and social club with DJs and live music. It's gay-friendly, and gay people do go, but it isn't a gay bar.
- Radclyffe's Restaurant & Cocktail Bar (1330 H St, Suite 110, Mansion Flats) opened in January 2025 in the former Bear Dive. It's a restaurant early in the evening and a 21+ queer lounge later, with Dyke Night, burlesque and pole nights. Google lists it as a lesbian bar. Open Thursday to Sunday.
- The Bolt (2560 Boxwood St, North Sacramento) is the leather, Levi's and bear bar, open daily 2pm to 2am with no cover. Gear is welcome but not required. It hosts the Mr. Bolt Leather contest, traditionally in April. You'll need a car or rideshare.
- Sidetrax is now Roscoe's (2022).
- Bear Dive is now Radclyffe's (2025).
- Galleria Bar was an old listing at 2001 K St, which is The Depot.
- Club Raven and Old Tavern are ordinary dive bars, not gay bars.

When to go
Friday and Saturday are the big nights at Faces and Badlands, and the queues build after 11pm. On weeknights the Merc and The Depot are livelier than the clubs. Sunday is brunch day at Roscoe's. On the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, the Rainbow Festival closes the streets around 20th and K, and every bar on the block is packed.
