It does not advertise its LGBTQ+-welcoming character ? no rainbow branding, no explicit programming ? but within Abidjan's LGBTQ+ community and among international visitors who have done their research, Le Must is the starting point. The Cocody location is significant: this is Abidjan's upscale residential and hotel quarter, the zone where the city's French-educated professional class, diplomatic community, and international visitors concentrate. The social codes here are more cosmopolitan than in other parts of the city, which provides a degree of informal cover for LGBTQ+ gatherings that would be harder to sustain in more socially conservative districts.
